Politico challenged Microsoft, in partnership with Enlighten Designs and Black Sheep Creative to produce an interactive Power BI interface to represent the elections in real time. With 28 member states and a number of parties segmented across those nations making up the EU coalition parliament. There are a lot of numbers to crunch and visualise in a way that is easy to understand.
Not only did this data need to be represented in a way that is easy to understand, but it had to be easy to understand and interpret by people who may not know a lot about the elections and political environment.
From a country perspective, users can see which parties will be represented
How many seats each country makes up
The wider breakdown of how each party will be represented
A visualisation of that shows how the government has ultimately formed
Power BI has a huge range of capabilities for taking big data, simplifying it and displaying it in a way that is easy for users to interact with. In this case, users can see how the European Union election results will impact them.
The implementation team also used animation in a very restricted way to ensure it delivered value as a useful communications technique. Helping users see how each of the 705 individuals come together from across the union to form the Parliament.
Our BI report had over 1.2 million views prior to the elections and over the election days with even more people using the visualisation to get a breakdown of how the numbers stacked up as the votes were counted and to see the final outcome.
